To obtain the Postgraduate Diploma in Archaeology, Arts and Culture, students are required to attend and undergo a successful examination in six (4) semester-long postgraduate seminars with a total of sixty (60) ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) units. During the first and second semesters students have to attend a total of four (4) seminars, with two (2) of them each semester. The dissertation is prepared and completed in the 3rd, 4th and 5th with the aid of two (2) additional courses on the methodology of research and writing up of the dissertation, corresponding to twenty (20) ECTS credits. The dissertation is credited with 70 ECTS units. The total ECTS credits obtained during the five (5) semester courses are eighty (80) plus the dissertation (70 ECTS); in total one hundred and fifty (150) ECTS.
The Postgraduate Degree Programme (Μ.Α.) in Archaeology, Arts and Culture of the School of History and Archaeology aims to provide specialised and in-depth training for archaeologists; to offer professional training in specific subfields of the discipline of Archaeology; to advance new technologies in research and studies in Humanities; to promote interdisciplinary approaches; to link the study of discipline subfields to the natural and man-made environments and their cultural perspectives; and to equip graduates with expertise in the applications of the disciplines in the domain of modern society. The Programme aims at learning results and skills that enable graduates to carry out specialised research in the disciplines of Archaeology and provide expert services in the fields of Education, the Discovery and Preservation of Monuments and Cultural Heritage Management.
Graduates of the Postgraduate Degree Programme in Archaeology, Arts and Culture of the School of History and Archaeology are equipped with the necessary knowledge to:
- design and carry out responsibly original scholarly research
- advance critical evaluation and use of knowledge and of diverse methodological and theoretical approaches
- search effectively for bibliographies and other sources in libraries, archives and on the internet and present the findings of their research
- generate novel research ideas and design, manage and carry through research projects.
Graduates of the Postgraduate Degree Programme in Archaeology, Arts and Culture acquire the following skills:
- carry out surface and excavation archaeological research fieldwork and study cultural matters
- present the findings of their research, orally and in writing, to diverse audiences in the manner suitable to each particular occasion
- make effective and productive use of new technologies
- submit applications for research programmes with all the parameters involved
- provide specialised services on matters relating to archiving and organizing of collections on an international, national and local level
- take on the role of expert in a variety of public sector departments and services
- exert critical self-evaluation.
In addition to their specialised knowledge in the discipline Archaeology, graduates of the Postgraduate Degree Programme in Archaeology, Arts and Culture are able to:
- commit themselves to scientific standards and critical evaluation of research and publication and intellectual honesty
- solve complex problems arising in the course of their work/research, in each particular case making use of new and/or interdisciplinary approaches and knowledge
- respect the importance of preserving cultural heritage and the environment and observe professional, social and moral responsibility
- respect cultural difference and diversity and show sensitivity in matters of intercultural convergence and gender issues
- coordinate and lead groups of collaborators with the aim of a more efficient completion of complex work in contexts that require new strategic approaches
