Course Content (Syllabus)
The course aims at familiarizing students with the architecture of the geographic space of East Mediterranean -focusing on the Aegean World and the wider Greek area- from Prehistoric Times, Antiquity and the Roman Era to the Byzantine, Post-Byzantine and Ottoman periods. Main subjects of the course are - Great civilisations of the Bronze Age (Minoan, Mycenaean) - Greek antiquity (Archaic, Classic and Hellenistic periods) - Roman and Late Roman era - Early, Middle and Late Byzantium - Post-Byzantine and East Islamic architecture - Greek Vernacular architecture of the 18th-19th centuries The architecture of each period is approached and critically analysed within the wider political, social and cultural context
