Course Content (Syllabus)
The course examines the theoretical approaches and concepts of urban development and the key issues concerning the practices and methods of urban planning. The lectures given by the teaching staff and invited speakers and the relevant discussions in the classroom are the basic inputs for the exams. The main themes of the course are: PART A: CONCEPTS AND THEORETICAL APPROACHES • City, urbanization and spatial planning • Urban planning and land-use regulation • Urban mobility and urban forms PART B: POLICIES AND REGULATIONS • Sustainable urban development: the international and the European dimension • Sustainable urban development policies in the European Union • Networks and systems of urban transport • Urban governance and strategic spatial planning • Urban planning systems and institutions PART C: APPLICATIONS AND EXAMPLES • Strategic spatial planning: Prague and Thessaloniki • Planning and urban development regulations: examples of projects • Urban interventions in the context of European cohesion policy • Urban interventions in Greece • Urban planning for sustainable and resilient cities The evaluation of students is based upon written exams on issues included in the proposed books as well as the presentations and the discussions that will take place during the course.
