Learning Outcomes
The course aims to familiarize students with the operation and spatial organization of metropolitan areas and the process of strategic spatial planning for these areas in relation to the process of territorial governance. Emphasis is placed on strategic spatial planning for metropolitan areas in Greece. The course also aims to develop analytical and synthetic skills for students so that they could elaborate strategic plans.
Course Content (Syllabus)
The key element of the course is the elaboration of a strategic spatial planning project for a particular metropolitan area, undertaken by students’ groups. The course consists of (a) Lectures and (b) elaboration of the project. The Lectures concern the following issues: • Spatial planning for metro areas in Greece: institutional framework, evolution and applications • Strategic spatial planning in Greece: formal and non-formal plans • Regulatory Plans and their relationship with other planning instruments • Metropolitan areas: role, functions, spatial organization, governance, challenges, visions and policies • The method of strategic spatial planning: stages and process of planning, SWOT and its utilization in spatial planning • Strategic Plans for metro areas in Europe: presentation and analysis • Strategic planning for metro areas at the EU level: Global Integration Zones and the case of metro areas of Greece.
