Learning Outcomes
• Identifiction and interpretation of the principal geological attributes at the site of a planned engineering project. • Interpretation of engineering geological / geotechnical maps, compilation of stratigraphic sections. • Specification and planning of geotechnical works for sub-surface investigation and engineering assessment of the investigation results. • Identification of the types of rock materials, classification of their quality for engineering purposes and evaluation of their suitability in relation to engineering activities such as the construction of surface or underground geostructures (slopes, tunnels), foundations and to their usage as construction materials. • Study of the mechanical behaviour of rocks as engineering materials. • Evaluation of the potential interactions between the geological anbience and engineering works - Identification of factors and mechanisms that may de-stabilise surface and underground geo-structures. • Investigation and interpretation of engineering geological problems in the design, construction and operation of infrastrucre projects (hghways, dams, tunnels, foundations, waste disposal schemes), in urban planning, in the protection of ancient monuments, etc.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Introduction to engineering geology and geomechanics - Contribution of engineering geology to the study and construction of technical works. Civil project failures attributed to geological factors. Types and structure of geomaterials. Elements of stratigraphy. Elements of Structural Geology. Technical description of geomaterials and structures. Engineering classification of rock materials and rock masses. Construction and application of stereonets. Techniques of ground investigation. Introduction to rock mechanics (mechanical behaviour of rocks, laboratory tests, stress state of geological formations, total and effective stresses, failure criteria, Mohr circles, strength and deformability of rock masses, principles of discontinuum mechanics). Groundwater. Movements of geological formations (landslides, settlements). Introduction to seismology. Aspects of engineering geology in civil infrastructure projects (dams, tunnels and underground facilities, highways, foundations of large civil structures). Introduction to environmental engineering geology.
