Course Content (Syllabus)
INTRODUCTION: Operations Management, Operations and Processes, Operations Performance, Operations Strategy. DESIGN: Process Design: 1 - positioning, 2 - analysis, The design of products and services, Supply network design, Forecasting, Layout and flow, Process technology, People, jobs and organization, Work study. PLANNING AND CONTROL: The nature of planning and control, Capacity planning and control, Analytical queuing models, Inventory planning and control, Supply chain planning and control, Enterprise resource planning (ERP), Materials requirement planning (MRP), Lean synchronization, Project planning and control, Quality management, Statistical process control (SPC). IMPROVEMENT: Operations improvement, Risk management, Organizing for improvement. CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY: Operations and corporate social responsibility. SERVICE OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT: The role of services in the Εconomy, Special characteristics of services, Service strategies, Service profit chain, e-service, Strategies for managing demand and supply. QUANTITATIVE MODELS: PERT CPM, PERT/TIME, PERT/COST, Six Sigma, Queueing Networks and their applications in modeling manufacturing and service systems: A Simple two-node queueing network model, Game theory: Games and their applications in modeling Supply Networks. CONTENTS OF THE COURSE PER WEEK (W1) INTRODUCTION TO OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT, CORRELATION WITH OPERATIONS RESEARCH, ASSIGNMENT OF CASE STUDIES & PROJECTS. (W2) QUALITY, TOTAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT, QUALITY ASSURANCE, ISO 9000, QUALITY IN SERVICES, SIX-SIGMA. (W3) LOGISTICS & SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT. PROJECT MANAGEMENT – PERT/CPM. (W4) WAITING LINES, QUEUING NETWORKS AND THEIR APPLICATIONS TO MODELING OF MANUFACTURING SYSTEMS AND SERVICE SYSTEMS. (W5) SERVICE MANAGEMENT – SERVICE STRATEGIES. NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT (NPD) & NEW SERVICE DVELOPMENT (NSD). (W6) e-SERVICE & YIELD MANAGEMENT AND CAPACITY AND DEMAND MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES. (W7) DEMONSTRATION OF THE S/W PACKAGES: LINDO, MS PROJECT MANAGER AND ARENA. (W8) JIT GAME TO SHOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE PUSH AND PULL PRODUCTION SYSTEMS. (W9) JOB DESIGN & WORK ORGANISATION. (W10) FORECASTING FOR NEW PRODUCTS (WITHOUT HISTORICAL DATA) & TESTS OF GOODNESS OF FIT. (W11) PRESENTATION OF CASE STUDIES. (W12) PRESENTATION OF PROJECTS. STUDENTS ARE REQUESTED TO SEARCH FOR THE 'MOST CITED' or 'THE MOST DOWNLOADED' ARTICLES IN RELEVANT TO OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT JOURNALS WITH A HIGH IMPACT FACTOR, SUCH AS THE: INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PRODUCTION RESEARCH, IIE TRANSACTIONS, INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PRODUCTION ECONOMICS, among others.
