Course Content (Syllabus)
Chemical reactors and catalyst bed configurations. Effect of Pressure and Temperature. Overview of acid, basic and redox heterogeneous catalysis. Types of heterogeneous catalysts and their characteristics (zeolites, mesoporous materials, mixed metal oxides, supported metals, nanostructured catalysts). Mass and energy balances in bioprocesses. Transport phenomena. Heterogeneous biochemical reactions. Bioreactors. Enzymatic, microbial fermentation. Restrictive substrate or product. Applications. Study of catalytic reactions with industrial, energy and environmental interest: pyrolysis of hydrocarbons to produce petroleum fuels. Selective Catalytic Reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in combustion processes off-gases. Catalytic conversion of biomass to produce biofuels and high value-added chemical products. Visit / demonstration of automated laboratory and pilot plant catalytic processes.
