This course engages with the relation between history and the cinema, the formation of the cinematic medium and the technological, social and economic conditions of the film industry, covering the period 1895-1948. We study the pioneers of the cinema, the key movements in the silent era, the Hollywood Studio Era (1930-1948) with special emphasis on the development, traits and conventions of the popular film genres (screwball comedy, musical, film noir, western), French Poetic Realism, Italian Neorealism and Greek cinema. In addition, we discuss the impact of the historical, socioeconomic and political context in the production and distribution of motion pictures. Finally, we present the basic principles of academic research. By the end of the semester, the students should be able to identify and analyze the key features of the cinema between 1895-1948 and to relate them to the wider social and historical environment that nurtured them.
