Learning Outcomes
The students will be capable to describe and analyze the theological teaching of the Fathers of that period.
They will be able to solve the various literatural and theological issues related to the teaching of the above fathers, especially after the preoccupation with their writings.
Furthermore, they will be able to connect that knowledge of the patristic theology with the work.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Teaching of specific issues of the ecclesiastical literature and patristic theology from 5th up to the 8th century, as encountered in the period under review. They are explained and analyzed essential theological issues that recorded in the patristic literature, and are presented positions of the Fathers always in relation to the emerging issues.
1. The position of John Chrysostom in the Church. Theology and literature.
2. The contribution of the theology of Augustine of Hippo in the Church.
3. Theodore of Mopsuestia as a precursor of Nestorianism. Nestorius and 3rd Ecumenical Council of Ephesus.
4. a)Cyril of Alexandria as a "teacher" of the Church. b)Attendance of the scientific colloquium of the P.P.S. of the School, the “Exegeticum-Seminar of Orthodox Hermeneutical Theology”.
5. The contribution of Proclus of Constantinople in the formation of the patristic teaching of the 5th century.
6. Asceticism and theology.
7. The enypostaton and the development of Christological teaching of Leontios the Byzantine.
8. a)Theology and “θεολογούμενα” in Maximus the Confessor. b)Attendance of the scientific colloquium of the P.P.S. of the School, the “Exegeticum-Seminar of Orthodox Hermeneutical Theology”.
9. “Γνωμικό θέλημα” and Monotheletism.
10. Theology of icons according to the John Damascene.
