Learning Outcomes
After the completion of the course it is expected that the students:
- will have understood the distinct literary role of the martyria
- will be able to detect the early martyria collections
- will be able to use the specific tools of research and study
- will have acquired specific knowledge on the early genre of hagiographic literature
Course Content (Syllabus)
We present the special issues which concern to the earlier genre of the hagiographical literature which was producted after the appearance of christian martyrs during the period of persecutions.
1. The historical context of persecution and the martyrs of the ancient Church
2. The theoretical background of the anti-Christian polemics: Contra Christianos
3. The cult of the martyrs and the martyria liturgy
4. Acts and historical martyria in the Greek and Latin tradition
5. Epic martyria
6. Ancient collections of martyria and Church diptycha
7. Eusebius of Caesarea, About the martyrs of Palestine
8. Martyria of Syria
9. The Martyria of the Church of Rome: Deposition Martyrum
10. The Martyria collection of Jerome: an "ecumenical" martyria collection
11. Other early collections (Carthago, Oxyrhynchus etc)
12. Examination of special, "non-canonical" cases
