Learning Outcomes
On completion of the module a student will :
1. have described the sources of canon law and ecclesiastical law,
2. have understood the domestic law of Orthodox Church and will have developed the ability to relate
church law and political, social, and cultural contexts.
3. have described, understood and expounded the State relations with :
a. religious communities in general
b. the Orthodox Church of Greece
4. have described and expounded specific matters of the Law of the Orthodox Church of Greece. Special
discussion is undertaken concerning her statutory legislation in Greek territory.
5. have described the particular ecclesiastical regimes in Greek territory, i.e. Mount Athos, semi-Autonomous Church of Crete and the Ecclesiastical Provinces of the Dodecanese).
Course Content (Syllabus)
This module introduces and examines the study of the Law of the Orthodox Church and the relations between the State and religious communities in general. It examines also how religious groups organize themselves within the State legal framework. The study of the right of Religious Freedom is also part of the course. The Law of the Orthodox Church of Greece and the particular ecclesiastical regimes in Greek territory, i.e. the Church of Crete, Mount Athos (Agion Oros) and the ecclesiastical provinces of the Dodecanese, are also examined.
