Course Content (Syllabus)
Spatial planning refers to the organization of human activities to all spatial scales from global urbanization and transnational spatial units to urban planning and design. This rather recent integrated approach responds to the blurred boundaries between scales of planning and to the constantly changing challenges of human development. The course introduces definitive concepts of spatial planning, tracing the development of ideas within the field from early spatial approaches to development and the first endeavors for spatial organization. Subsequently, different issues of spatial planning are examined such as land uses, transport and environmental protection. Contemporary trends and approaches permeating spatial planning such as sustainable development, resilience, spatial justice, participatory planning are studied critically. Finally the institutional framework of spatial planning in Greece and the EU initiatives towards a European spatial policy are discussed. Special emphasis is placed on the urban scale and the critical analysis of dominant trends and tools of spatial planning: from metropolitan plans to localized urban regeneration projects, and from city-branding and the increasingly important role of the corporate sector to citizen – led initiatives about the neighbourhood and the city.
