Learning Outcomes
Students after succssfully attending the course will be able to:
i) understand the nature of congenital and acquired thoracic disease (airways, lung, mediastinum, pleura and thoracic wall) that requires surgical intervention,
ii) guide appropriate diagnostic work-up,
iii) evaluate the results of related diagnostic procedures,
iv) guide appropriate management in a specialized centre,
v) acquire a clear overview on the management of thoracic disease by combining knowledge gained in this course with what they have already learned in Thoracic Medicine, General Surgery and Radiology/Radiotherapy Courses. Decisions on the management of most thoracic malignancies are based on multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings.
Course Content (Syllabus)
Thoracic Surgery Course aims to introduce the pre-graduate medical student to the principles that guide diagnosis and surgical management of thoracic disease. Presentations related to diagnosis and management follow evidence-based guidelines. Minimal-invasive techniques, technologic advancements and future prospects are also discussed. The main scope of the course is to provide the young doctors with all the basic knowledge related to diagnosis and surgical indications of main conditions affectiong the thoracic organs, such as lung cancer, COPD, pleural cavity disease, mediastinal disease, major airway and chest wall disease and thoracic trauma.
More specifically, Thoracic Surgery Course Syllabus covers the following:
1. Thoracic anatomy and diagnostic evaluation of thoracic disease.
2. Physiology of the cardiorespiratory tract. Postoperative management after thoracic surgery.
3. Surgical incisions and types of operations
4. Mediastinal disease
5. Diseases of trachea and major airways.
6. Thoracic trauma
7. Pleural disease
8. Pulmonary emphysema
10. Primary lung cancer- Solitary pulmonary nodule- Metastatic lung cancer.
11. Benign tumors and inflammatory lung disease.
12. Thoracoscopic surgery.
