Learning Outcomes
The aim of the course is the acquisition of knowledge on the history and the theory of the hermeneutical methods of the Bible and the acquisition abilities in the application of ancient and modern methods of interpretation on the biblical text. More specifically, the knowledge and the familiarization with the modern hermeneutical methods in combination with the exploitation of the patristic hermeneutical tradition for a contemporary interpretative action.
By the successful completion of the class it is expected for the students
  • to know the theory and the practice of the ancient and modern hermeneutical methods
  • to approach critically and discern the contribution of each hermeneutical method to the exegesis of the biblical texts.
  • to apply the proper hermeneutical methods to the exegesis of the biblical text.
  • to exploit and to combine the patristic hermeneutical tradition with the modern hermeneutical theory and practice.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course of the Hermeneutics of the biblical texts informs about the object, the methodology and the purpose of the discipline of Hermeneutics. Ancient and modern hermeneutical methods of the Bible are presented and evaluated, and their application to the biblical text is taught. More specifically, language is considered as a mean of exegesis of the biblical texts. Modern linguistic and literary hermeneutical theories are presented and evaluated, and their application to the biblical texts is taught.
  1. Definition of the discipline of Hermeneutics. The relationship between language and interpretation.
  2. The interpretation in the ancient world, Greek and Jewish one.
  3. The New Testament interprets the Old Testament.
  4. The exegesis of the Saint Scripture in the early Ecclesia.
  5. The exegesis of the Saint Scripture in the Middle Ages.
  6. The patristic exegetical tradition. Theology, Exegesis and Hermeneutics. Ecclesia and Hermeneutics.
  7. Hermeneutical methods of the modern times. Historic-philological criticism, form-criticism and redaction criticism method.
  8. Rhetorical criticism, narrative criticism and stucturalist criticism.
  9. Reception and intertextuality. Reader’s response analysis.
  10. Cultural and comparative analysis. Socio-scientific analysis.
  11. Semantic analysis, historic-social and pragmatic analysis.
  12. Liturgical and performative method. Ascetic Hermeneutics.
  13. Steps of the hermeneutical process. Exploitation of the sources of the human sciences. Exploitation of the means of technology and electronic information.

Description
A two-hour written examination by questions for a short development of taught issues.
The classroom participation (5%), the homework (15%) and the attendance of scientific conferences (10%) are assessed in addition.
