Course Content (Syllabus)
Applied Aesthetics: Issues of Style.
Practiced theory and theory in practice, aiming at the cultivation of diversity of directing styles. Analysis of fragments from different films (from classically narrative to extremely avant-garde), using multiple methodologies (structuralist, neo-formalist, psychoanalytic), with a strict focus on an internal approach, synchronically and diachronically. Comprehension in practice of the elements that constitute a film’s style. Synthesis of the different kinds of knowledge and expertise around the cinematic construction, stressing the question of style.
This module is addressed mainly to students aspiring to become film directors (who have chosen the direction “Film Directing”).
The students learn to read the signifying internal structure of films, focusing on their style. They experiment in individual synthetic exercises on different cinematic styles. They search the particular influences through which they shape their own personal gaze and point of view. They locate the areas of their stylistic and conceptual interests, in preparation for the the final 8ΕΡ1 WORKSHOP and their final-year synthetic DEGREE THESES.
