Learning Outcomes
The course aims to familiarize students with the process of regional spatial planning and especially the institutional framework, agencies and mechanisms of the spatial planning system in Greece. It also aims to clarify the relationship of regional spatial planning with various types of planning at different levels (local, urban, national, supra national)

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course consists of two sections: a) Lectures on theoretical and methodological issues concerning the scope and content of regional spatial planning, the principles of sustainable development, the history and framework of regional spatial planning in Greece, current instruments of spatial planning and their application in practice b) Elaboration of a regional planning project that refers to a specific region. The projects are performed by groups of students. The different parts of each project are presented and discussed in class in phases, in the form of a seminar. Emphasis is placed on issues of rural and urban settlement networks, transport networks, land use organization, land use conflicts, environmental protection and management of natural resources and protected areas, natural and human-made landscapes, special types of areas (urban, rural, mountainous, and coastal areas).
