General Prerequisites
Students are advised to take this course after having attended and successfully passed the Introductory Course to Ancient Greek History (HAN 101).
Learning Outcomes
Students become familiarized with the transformation of the Archaic World and the transition to the Classical Period. They understand the evolution and significance of the civic institutions as well as the emergence of civic identity and political thinking. They understand the characteristic historical profile of the Archaic and Classical times and are able to discuss and interpret sources related to these periods.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Week #1 Main historical sources connected with the study of the Archaic and Classical times: archaeological finds, literary and inscriptional evidence. Main representatives of the historiography of the periods. Week #2 Developments leading to the formation of the polis. The profile of the Greek world in the 9th and 8th cent. The role of religion and the appearance of sanctuaries. The Homeric poems-The world of Hesiod-The invention of the Greek Alphabet-Organization of communities-growth of population-The emergence of the city-states. Week #3 Greek Colonization (8th-6th cent.) Causes. The spread of Greek colonies and culture in the Mediterranean-Phases of the Colonization and its characteristic features-Political and social organization of the Greek communities during the age of Colonization-The effects of Colonization on the society. Week #4 Crisis of the aristocratic, autocratic regime-Transformation of the communities-Agrarian crisis-“Hoplite” revolution-laws- creation of an objective political framework: constitutions. The introduction of coinage. Week #5 The rise of the tyrants (Corinth, Sikyon,Argos, Samos). Week#6 The Greek World during the 6th cent. B.C. Law-givers. Lycurg and Sparta, Solon and Athens. Week #7 The tyranny of Peisistratus. Cleisthenes’ reforms and the beginning of Democracy. Ephialtes’ reforms. Further development of the polis. Week #8 Greek-Persian confrontation: Ionian revolution. Greek world and the Persian Empire till the Battle of Marathon. Themistocles: the politician and his naval programme. Xerxes’ campaign and the battles of the years 480-479. Week #9 The “Fifty Years” period (478-431B.C.): First Athenian (‘Delian’) League. Athens at the time of Pericles and the rise of the Athenian Hegemony-Nature and characteristic features of the Athenian imperialism. Week #10 Peloponnesian War. Week #11 The period of Spartan Hegemony. 4th cent. developments: Athens recovers from the effects of the Peloponnesian War (from the King’s Peace,386 B.C., till the founding of the Second Athenian League). Thebes and Boeotia. Week #12 The Rise of Macedonia till the times of Philipp II. Isocrates and the Panhellenic Idea. Battle of Chaeronea (338B.C.) and the Corinthian League (337B.C.). Week #13 Revision and preparation for the exams.

Description
Written exam: 100%. Students are evaluated according to their ability to compose short essays on specific historical questions, to examine critically historical sources and generally to prove their understanding of the main issues in the study of Archaic and Classical Greece. The depth of understanding not the extent of fact- knowledge is the key factor for a successful exam. Course-attendance is considered necessary.
