Learning Outcomes
Students are introduced to the basic concepts, as well as theories of Cognitive Psychology. Mind operations are approached from a psychological viewpoint and the course objective is for students to be able to understand the cognitive substratum of learning: how the child's mind operates, how she/he processes information and the types of cognitive processing that take place when learning.
Course Content (Syllabus)
Introduction to Cognitive Psychology. Information Processing Theories, Parallel Distributed Models. Oral and written language: Theories and models. Sensory, short-term and working memory: structure and models. Long-term memory: structure and models. Knowledge representation. Encoding and retrieval processes. Facilitating cognitive development: thought, problem solving, building knowledge. Cognitive operations in the classroom: learning to read, reading to learn.
