THEORIES OF ARCHITECTURE 1: ARCHITECTURAL MEDIA AND THE PRODUCTION OF THEORIES

General Foundation

Understanding of the relationship between the way we create architecture and the way we understand the world Understanding of the way the creative action is developed and its dependence from the broader ideological and cultural environment. Understanding of the design process and the way it is structured following the dominant conceptions of architecture. Development of capacity to make abstructions and to reveal the essential aspect of a design question. Development of the students' ability to be expressed through architecture.

The module investigates the creative act and more specifically the parameters that organise and direct it. It examines the changes happened during the last fifty years in the ways architectural creations are designed and analyzes the relations between the way we are designing and our conceptions about architecture, about people and society architectural creations are addressed, and the world vision as the wider mental environment in which our social life is unfolded. A large part of the module will concern architectural practices and experimentations developed with the support of sophisticated information technology driven design tools in an attempt to reveal the logics, the ideas and the myths that encourage and legitimise conteporary architectural creation.
