Upon the successful completion of the course, the students will be able to fully comprehend the electrical transients in power systems.
Initially, they will be able to fully understand the behavior of traveling waves at line terminations, multiple reflections of travelling waves.
In addition, the students will be able to comprehend circuit interruption and switching transients and protection mechanisms of systems and equipment against transient over-currents and over-voltages.
Finally, the students will be able to mathematically model and estimate steady-state and transient stability of power systems.
Course Content (Syllabus)
Fundamental notions about electrical transients in power systems. Travelling waves on transmission lines. Behavior of traveling waves at line terminations. Multiple reflections of travelling waves. Reactor, capacitance and transformer switching. Circuit interruption and switching transients. Simple and abnormal switching transients. Protection of systems and equipment against transient over-currents and over-voltages. Steady-state stability of power systems. Swing curve. Small oscilations. Transient stability of power systems. Transfer reactance. Equal area criterion for transient stability.
