Learning Outcomes
By attending succesfully this course, the student will be able
1. to conduct field work in order to find, record and film authentic music renditions, in different regions of Greece,
2. to structure and to prepare a paradigmatic lesson concerning Greek folk music in school,
3. to create and conduct an ensemble of traditional music,
4. to produce a CD or DVD with recordings-film with authentic older and newer performers,together with the relevant musicological commentary,
5. to produce a musical-educational program for broadcasting, television or other cultural events.
Course Content (Syllabus)
This course is supplimentary to the "Introduction to Greek folk music". The knowledge of the theoretical and historical part of the Greek folk music will provide the ground for the creation of musical ensembles.
Contents:
- Practice and techniques of the Greek folk song.
- Characteristic elements of the folk song, field work and study of archives, aiming at the finding of the authentic Greek folk song.
- Ways of learning, according to the oral tradition.
- Exercises of combining the poetical text with the music and the movement.
- The necessity of the music educational process for the continuation of the folk music tradition.
- Methods for the didactics of Greek folk music and their application to the educational process.
Works for the student assessment: The students will look for authentic songs (in archives and through field work), they will create music ensembles, they will learn and teach, respectively, in class some folk songs and they have to explain the musical concepts which they intend to use in their didactic approach (characteristic modes, melodic models, specific rhythms, dynamics, timbres, elements of primitive polyphony a.o.).
Finally, the whole work will be presented in a musical event at the institute or other places (Cultural centres or State primary and secondary schools).
