Advanced approach to the biology and behavior of birds. Αnalysis of the
importance of birds as upper links in the food chains, as bioindicators and also understanding their interactions with man aiming in the rational management of their populations.
Course Content (Syllabus)
Bird behaviour. Singing and its role. Bird interactions: displays, plumage coloration, communication. Basic types of communal behaviour. Bird migration. Mating systems, nesting, incubation. Brood parasitism. Demography and populations. Theories about clutch size. Patterns of population growth and regulation. Modern threats to birds. Bird conservation projects in Greece and elsewhere. Conflicts between man and birds. Bird overpopulations and their control. The birds as bioindicators of pollution. Nature management for the benefit of birds. Special techniques in bird study.
