Learning Outcomes
The class aims at the knowledge of the biological characteristics of the main environmental pollutants, as well as their effects on the health of living organisms, in particular on the various levels of organism organization, such as molecules, biochemical puthways, cells, tissues, organisms and populations. Also, it aims at the knowledge and understanding of the basical defence mechanisms against the high concentration of pollutans in the environment, as well as at the knowledge of methods used for the, on time, prevention of the pollution of the ecosystems. On the other hand, it aims on the environmental sensitization of the students. Skills: The course aims at the understanding the key issues on the evaluation of pollution (biomonitoring of pollution) on biochemical, cellular and population level. It aims also at the ability of using the optical microscope, photometer and other scientific instruments and techniques for the understanding of the physiology of the organisms, the evaluation and parametering of the function of the organisms. Practice on the study and understanding of scientific text.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Major classes of pollutants. Routes by which pollutants enter ecosystems. The fate of pollutants in organism and ecosystems. Biochemical effects of pollutants. Effects on the physiology of organisms. Effects on cells and tissues. Effects of pollutants on whole organisms. Biomarkers, by which pollution is evaluated. Biomonitoring of pollution in fields. Changes in population dynamics. Changes in communities and ecosystems.
