Learning Outcomes
The students will be able to know the: - main groups of Greek Aromatic Plants with economic importance - the main groups of natural compounds with biological activity. The main medicinal plants traded in Greece. The existing framework for the safe use of medicinal plant products. - the value of DNA barcoding in the identification of aromatic and/or medicinal plants

Course Content (Syllabus)
The secondary metabolites of plants as biologically active compounds. Aromatic plants - Essential oils: isolation, composition, within species diversity. Characteristics of Greek aromatic plants. The trade names. The group of aromatic plants "oregano", "thyme" "mint", "sage" and "mountain tea". The main groups of compounds with biological activity (flavonoids, terpenoids, alkaloids, etc.). Characteristics of the Greek herb market. Traditional herbs traded in Greece. The Framework for the Safe Use of Plant Products - Responsible Bodies. Molecular identification of plants and plant based products. Authentication and conservation of plant material.
