Learning Outcomes
Learning outcomes: At the end of this course, students should be able to understand : a. The principles of control of body functions by the nervous system and its contribution to homeostasis. b. The principles of spinal and supraspinal control of posture and locomotor. c. The concept of upper and lower motor neuron and its meaning in clinical neurology. d. The function of special senses (vision,hearing and equilibrium, taste, smell). e. The principles of skeletal muscle contraction and function. Function of cardiac muscle and smooth muscles. f. Thermoregulation -adaptation to diverse climates

Course Content (Syllabus)
Nervous System, Muscle Physiology, Special Senses (25 hours) Instructors:M.Tsantarliotou, S. Lavrentiadou, I. Flaskos M.Tsantarliotou 1st-4th hour: Functional principles of the nervous συστήματος(resting membrane potential, nerve impulse, neural communication, neurotransmitters, postsynaptic receptors, neuromuscular synapses, motor end plate). Summation. Neural regeneration. 5th hour: Spinal control of body posture and locomotion Spinal reflexes 6th -7th hour: Supra spinal control of body posture and locomotion (brainstem, cerebellum). 8th hour: The Electroencephalogram and Sensory-Evoked Potentials, Sleep and Waking 9th-10th hour: The Autonomic Nervous System 11th hour: Pain perception, referred pain, hyperalgesia, opioids 12th hour: Cerebrospinal fluid and the Blood Brain Barrier I.Flaskos 13th -14th hour: Energy metabolism in nervous system S. Lavrentiadou 15th-16th hour: Molecular mechanism of muscle contraction 17th-19th hour: Skeletal muscles: muscle mechanics and performance, myogram, the “all-or-none” principle, motor unit, wave summation, tetanus, isotonic and isometric contractions “fast” and “slow” fibers, fatigue, muscle hypertrophy and atrophy, trophic effect of motor neurons on muscle cells 20th -22nd hour:Visual activity, receptors and neural function of the retina, physiology of hearing and equilibrium, sensory receptors of the inner ear and their function, taste and smell I.Flaskos 23rd hour: Energy metabolism in the eye S. Lavrentiadou 24th- 25th hour: Thermoregulation Practicals 3 hours: Principles of physiograph operation and other laboratory equipment (Lab) 3 hours: Neurophysiology (Computer-Assisted) 3 hours: Frog nerve-muscle preparation, myograph(Lab)
