Learning Outcomes
- Familiarity with the basic characteristics of the field of visual culture and aesthetics and with the various types of artistic practices, with special emphasis on the political dimensions of art.
- Articulation of innovative interdisciplinary connections.
- Collection and evaluation of evidence and research resources aiming at the study of the political connotations of contemporary art.
- Processing and synthesis of information from a variety of sources (conventional and electronic) in order to develop organised and persuasive oral and written arguments.

Course Content (Syllabus)
No artistic activity takes place in a vacuum. Artistic production responds to particular socio-political challenges and, in its turn, creates social and political effects. The relationship between art and politics is thus constitutive. This is paradigmatically shown in the activities of artistic avant-gardes within modernity. And vice-versa: the forces of domination have always tried to control and regulate the art-field, censoring and/or encouraging particular artistic traditions. Today, contemporary political theory and philosophy returns to reevaluate this ambivalent symbiotic relation between art and politics and to locate the radical potential of artistic practices.
Within this framework, the emphasis of this course is placed on the following thematic clusters: α). Artistic avant-gard and social change, b). Censorship and resistance, c). Contemporary critical art, d). Art and democracy. We will discuss examples coming primarily from the visual arts, but also from literature, theatre and film.

Student Assessment
Description
The exams of the course “Contemporary Art and Politics” are conducted orally as follows: The students will have to select a work of art of their personal choosing (artistic, literary, film, documentary, etc.) and prepare a brief paper of 2-3 pages in which they will (a) present briefly this artwork and (b) develop an argument highlighting its political character and the way in which it falls under the problematic of “art and politics” with reference to specific concepts and theorisations discussed during the lectures or analyzed in the textbooks and/or in the uploaded material in the e-learning platform of the course. During the oral examination, the students will present their chosen artwork and their reasoning around it and will engage in a dialogue with the other students and staff.
