Learning Outcomes
Knowledge of the characteristics, the properties and the defects appeared on wood which are related to the timber quality. Skills-abilities: Qualitative evaluation of standing trees and the produced round timber at felling areas, as well as the produced sawn timber at sawmills. Qualitative classification of timber on quality classes and application of quality grading standards for the classification of wood on round and sawn timber. Assessment and evaluation of the influence of wood quality characteristics on timber properties and uses.
Course Content (Syllabus)
Definition of wood quality. Natural and growth-related defects and their re¬lations to wood quality and utilization. Influences of the environment, silvicultural and harvesting practices, forest management and heredity on wood quality. Secondary defects developed after tree harvesting and during wood processing, uses (defect types, causes, pre¬ventive measures). Anatomical features, deviations form normal structure and relations to wood quality, properties and industrial utilization of wood.
