Course Content (Syllabus)
Introduction to waste management. Primary treatment – sieves. Sand and fat collectors. Equilibration ponds – pumping. Sedimentation and floating of waste. Biological treatment processes. Environmental biochemistry – microorganisms population dynamics. Microbiology of secondary treatment processes. Secondary treatment by suspended growth biomass processes. Oxidation ponds – activated sludge process design. Secondary treatment by attached growth and hybrid biological processes. Production and treatment of sludge. Secondary settling tanks. Disinfection and post-aeration. Tertiary treatment (chemical precipitation of phosphorous, reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, carbon sorption). Waste management (management, storage and thickening of sludge, solids management, alkaline stabilization, aerobic and anaerobic digestion, sludge dehydration, use of sludge and solids).
Keywords
