Learning Outcomes
With the successful completion of the course the student will be able to: -Understand the polymer synthesis at the Chemistry / Mechanism level as well as at the level of process design. -Understand the basic properties of polymers and how they are exploited for their characterization and for the design of products with specific sets of properties. -Understand the thermomechanical behavior and rheology of polymers and how they are utilized for the processing of polymers and the design of end products.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Introductory concepts, nomenclature, molecular weight distributions. Polymerization mechanisms. Step growth polymerization, sol-gel reactions. Chain polymerization. Copolymerization. Catalytic systems, stereoregular polymers. Polymer reaction engineering. Chain conformations. Polymer solutions, alloys and blends. Glass transition. Melting and crystallization. Rubber elasticity, thermoplastic elastomers. Viscoelasticity. Fracture mechanics of polymers. Polymer rheology. Extrusion, injection molding, polymer processing techniques.
