For comfortable course attendance knowledge of the subject of the courses "Materials Science and Technology I & II" is required
Learning Outcomes
With the successful course attendance the students are able to interprate material behavior related to mass or charge transport (i.e. diffusion, electrical properties) and to design the detailed crystal structure of a material, including the type and concentration of dominating point defects, towards a desired material behavior

Course Content (Syllabus)
Intrinsic and extrinsic point defects in oxides. Ionic point defect diagrams. Electronic defects. Intrinsic non stoichiometry. Extrinsic non stoichiometry. Brouwer diagrams for point defects. Applications in temperature sensors (possitive or negative coefficient), ionic conductors in fuel cells, gas sensors, humidity sensors, ohmic resistors, thermal elements, magnetic materials.

Student Assessment
Description
The students have to complete their homework exercises given to them every two weeks. Subsequently they have to present a research subject related to the development of new materials. At the end of the semester there is also a quiz with multiple choice questions. The contribution coefficients to the final mark is 30% for the homework, 40% for the research subject and 305 for the multiple choice quiz
