Familiarization of students with the phenomenon of religious (and pilgrimage) tourism; the usefulness of theological knowledge in professional involvement with the religious (and pilgrimage) tourism; introduction to the main religious monuments, both in Greece and abroad.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Specific theoretical knowledge, practical skills and information related to the phenomenon of religious (and pilgrimage) tourism and specifically: its distinguishing characteristics; its relationship with theology and other sciences; its contribution to the emergence of the greek tradition, religious orthodox monuments and shrines; also, its contribution to the local and national economic development and its perspective upgrade in Greece. During the course, also, main religious monuments both in Greece and abroad are presented by the Power Point application. 1. Introductory meanings, God, man, religion, philosophy, journey. The phenomenon and the meaning of Religious Tourism. Religious – Pilgrimage tours. 2. Religious tourism in Greece. Planning, implementation, data. 3. Orthodox Christian Monuments in Greece: Part 1. 4. Orthodox Christian Monuments in Greece: Part 2. 5. Orthodox Christian Monuments in Greece: Part 3. 6. Monasticism as a pole of religious pilgrimage and tourists. The case of Mount Athos. 7. Orthodox Christian Monuments abroad: Part 1. 8. Orthodox Christian Monuments abroad: Part 2. 9. The main religious monument of other religions. 10. Contemporary issues in religious tourism. 11. The professional prospect of religious tourism in Greece. The theologian’s role. 12. The contribution of the State and the Church in the development of religious tourism. 13. Educational tour. Presentation of the monuments from students working groups.
