Learning Outcomes
(a) To give students a broad survey of the development of epic poetry throughout antiquity.
(b) To help students recognize the differences detected among different epics, in terms of themes, poetics and aesthetics.
(c) To enable students to understand in greater depth issues pertaining to language, meter and style that characterize the epic poetry in every period.

Course Content (Syllabus)
This course is designed exclusively for classics majors. It covers, by means of a survey, the development of epic poetry throughout antiquity, focusing on the representatives of the epic genre, the various categories of epic poetry, and the special features of epic as exhibited in different poets and periods. The course also explores in depth several important scholarly issues examined in classical scholarship on epic and employs the relevant methodology thoroughly. A certain epic normally forms the basis for reading from the original, and emphasis is placed on issues pertaining to language, style, meter and interpretation.
