DISTRIBUTION OF STUDENTS IN GROUPS IN WARDS
Nominal lists of students (about 90 in each Pediatric Clinic) are sent by the Secretariat of the Medical School, which is responsible for the separation of students of the 10th semester into 4 groups (A, B, C, D), one for each Pediatric Clinic.
Learning objectives/ outcomes (TABLE 1) in the course of Pediatrics (I 0325) are common in all pediatric clinics. However, there are few differences regarding clinical practice, which is adapted to the existing infrastructure of each clinic.
Educational program in Pediatrics is from Monday to Friday. Every day, from Monday to Thursday, at least one group may be located in the outpatient clinics, depending on the scheduled visits of patients. The communication is done with the person who has the responsibility of each ward.
Nominal tabs for the medical robe are distributed to all students (as well as locker keys in certain clinics). Helping educational tools eg treatment guides, notes of Members of the Faculty, are also given in certain pediatric clinics.
As far as the course of Pediatrics I 0325 is concerned, on the notice board of each Pediatric Clinic, are posted:
1) The curriculum timetable
2) A table containing the distribution of students in wards
ABSENCES
Students can justify 3 days of absence during practice if absences are more than three then practice is considered inadequate and has to be repeated.
EXAMINATION
The grading/ evaluation of students for the course of Pediatrics I 0325 is based on written examinations. The latter are conducted according to the Curriculum of the Medical School, at an appointed day and hour, during the exam period of June and September, after prior announcement. Written examinations include multiple-choice and short-answer questions. The Syllabus which is examined is predetermined and available to students from the beginning of their training, so that they are able to be prepared (TABLE 2).
During the period of their clinical practice in the wards, students’ practical skills are examined by the responsible Faculty member and the grade is taken into account for the final evaluation as well.
The grading scale is between 0 and 10 for both written and oral examination.
After implementation of the European Credit Transfer Systeam (ECTS) in the Faculty of Medicine, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the score of the written examination will also be presented in the form of A, B, C, D, E, F where: A = 10%, B = 25%, C = 30%, D = 25%, E = 10%, F = failure. The ECTS system initially divides students into two groups: those who succeeded-passed and those who failed; then it assesses the performance of these two groups separately. Thus,l those who succeeded are further divided into five subgroups the best 10% are awarded an A grade, the next 25% a B grade, the following 30% a C, the following 25% a D and the final 10% an E.
