Learning Outcomes
Last-year students in Civ Eng have the chance to familiarise themselves with the modern methods for analysis of reinforced concrete (R/C) structures using the nonlinear finite element analysis method for: - line element structures (frames) - planar and 3D structures In-depth knowledge of the behaviour of R/C members under different stress states (1D, 2D, 3D) Familiarisation with modern software for the nonlinear analysis of R/C structures (SAP-2000 Nonlinear, ATENA).

Course Content (Syllabus)
Modern methods for analysis of R/C structures. Range of application of linear methods - Current code requirements. Nonlinear analysis of R/C frame structures: Model types, Loading protocols, constitutive laws, failure criteria. Fundamental models for R/C and its constituent materials: Uniaxial compression (of normal and high-strength concrete). Multiaxial compression. Confined concrete - Reinforcing of complex cross sections. Moment-curvature and moment-rotation diagrams for R/C members; failure criteria. Concrete and steel under uniaxial tension. Bond between concrete and steel. Point hinge (lumped plasticity) models: Elastoplastic point hinges - Point hinges with any type of constitutive law. Application of the point hinge method to the analysis of R/C frames. Nonlinear analysis of planar R/C structures: Constitutive laws for (general) biaxial loading. Nonlinear elasticity models. Modelling of planar R/C structures - Plasticity models, fracture mechanics models - Applications. Modelling of 3D R/C structures -: Constitutive laws for (general) triaxial loading. Plasticity models, fracture mechanics models - Applications.

Students can choose whether they will be assessed solely on the basis of a written exam or a combination of written exam and up to two projects (in which case 33% of the final mark comes from the exam and 67% from the projects)
