Course Content (Syllabus)
Spatial planning constitutes an interdisciplinary field which refers to the study and the organization of human activities in space, as well as a policy practice which determines social, economic, cultural and ecological parameters of development in geographical space. For the experts of space spatial planning comprises theories, methods, tools and processes according to which they interpret and/or act contributing to the continuously changing development conditions on interconnected geographical levels (global urbanization, interstate forms, interregional spatial units, national -state lands, regions, cities, urban parts). This rather recent integrated approach responds to the blurred boundaries between scales of planning and to the constantly changing challenges of in economy, governance, ecology, social cohesion and human development. The course educational objective is to provide students with a wide framework of perception and understanding of contemporary dimensions and issues in spatial planning, in specific, to enhance the fields of potential action and roles of architects - planners in spatial planning. Special emphasis is placed on the urban scale and the critical analysis of dominant trends and tools of spatial planning: from metropolitan plans to localized urban regeneration projects, and from city-branding and the increasingly important role of the corporate sector to citizen – led initiatives about the neighbourhood and the city.
