Learning Outcomes
Upon the successful completion of the course, the students will be able to: 1. know the historical context of emergence and deployment of the main schools of moral thought, 2. acknowledge and evaluate the different types of argumentation on moral matters, 3. comprehend the importance of the different moral theories in the process of formation of social values, 4. appreciate the role of social values in the construction of ideologies and their impact on science, economy, and politics, 5. be acquainted with the articulation of a coherent argumentation and the debate between arguments based on adversary fundamentals or perspectives.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course deals with the following questions: 1. What is ethics? What is moral philosophy? 2. The questions of moral conscience and freedom, 3. How is morality related to politics? 4. The most important schools of moral philosophy: aretology, deontology, utilitarianism, consequentialism, sentimentalism, contractualism, 5. Crucial distinctions; i) ethics and religion ii) ethics and law 6. Contemporary moral challenges and 'applications': i) the human condition in the context of new science and technologies ii) bioethics and medical ethics iii) gender iv) ecology v) economic inequalities vi) deontology (professional, scientific, political)
