Learning Outcomes
The complete presentation of the ideological-cultural dimensions of space and finally of the spatial planning at a time when more and more we experience change and multiculturalism. Then, understanding of the privileged relationship between space and cultural and ideological structures and their relations with the phenomenon of power in different space-time and systems.
Course Content (Syllabus)
The Cultural Geography as a branch of Human Geography. The anthropology of space as study - synchronic and diachronic – of composition of social groups and space. The concepts of culture and civilization. Evolution of notions in Cultural Geography. Culture, civilization, cultural system. Value systems in different times and places. Narratives and cinematic representations of space in cinema. The importance of the image, imagination and prefabricated patterns. Discussion of literature texts about the city.
Concepts of public and private space, of social and cultural construction of gender, race, ethnicity and social class. Examples from the city and countryside. The concept of otherness and the counterpoint between "us" and "them." Examples from the city and the countryside (Pomaks, Gypsies, etc.). Cultural identities and interactions at local and supra-local level. Post-modernity and globalization. Ethnicity, nationalism, local identities and place in theory and practice: the Greek case.
Description
Oral examination and group writing work exercise in the thematic (2017)"Identities, "otherness" and City". Is requested the utilization of documentary or video related to the space or phenomenon of direct experience or interest of the student.
It is required the exploitation of documentaries, video related to space and the application of qualitative research, mainly deep interviews, the techniques of audiovisual anthropology (fotos, video) to the socio-spatial phenomena of direct experience through the proposed topics by the professor. It is proposed to be combined with the tools of cartography, GIS Information systems, Urban Planning and Spatial Planning "tools" for an eventual Proposal of Cultural Spatial Planning.
