Learning Outcomes
Purpose of this course is for the students to know and understand the basic fields of research and methodology of Classical Greek Archaeology and its various thematic areas (architecture, topography, sculpture, ceramic production etc.), which they will study in detail during the next semesters, also to get familiar with the archaeological terminology and the relevant archaeological material.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Greek Archaeology uncovers, examines and studies the material remains of ancient Greece from the 10th to the 1st century BC. The course focuses on the history of this particular discipline as well as its research sections. The principal aspects of architecture, city planning, sculpture, pottery and small-scale art along with the conditions that shaped their development will be presented through the examination of important monuments and artifacts of the ancient Greek civilization dated from the Proto-Geometric to the Late Hellenistic period.

Week #2 Methods of archaeological field research – the dating of archaeological finds
Week #3 The Periods of Greek antiquity
Week #4 Architecture: the ancient greek polis – sanctuaries – tombs – building materials
Week #5 Methods of construction – masonry systems – the orders - temples
Week #6 Types of buildings
Week #7 Repetition
Week #8 Sculpture: categories of sculpture – materials – the sculpture of the geometric and archaic periods
Week #9 The sculpture of the archaic and classical periods
Week #10 The sculpture of the Hellenistic period – portraits - repetition
Week #11 Pottery: Prices – workshops – the shapes of vases and their use – protogeometric and geometric pottery
Week #12 The archaic period - Attic blackfigured vases – Attic redfigured vases

The aim of the examination is to establish whether the students know and comprehends information by commenting on images and forming opinions. For this reason, attendance –though not compulsory- is considered necessary.
