Learning Outcomes
Sociolinguistics focuses on the social dimension of language and examines the linguistic diversity in relation to the social, political and ideological phenomena. By the end of this course, students will have examined key issues of sociolinguistic and dialectal nature of Spanish language. From this perspective, after an introduction to the science of sociolinguistics and its relationship with other related disciplines, they will be familiarized with linguistic diversity phenomena and their relationship with various social factors. They will be able to describe, evaluate, and communicate issues associated with language contact as well as synchronic and diachronic phenomena and processes that formed the contemporary linguistic reality in Spain and the Hispanic world in general.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Sociolinguistics focuses on the social dimension of language and examines the linguistic diversity in relation to the social, political and ideological phenomena. In this particular course, we examine key issues of sociolinguistic and dialectal nature of Spanish language. From this perspective, after an introduction to the science of sociolinguistics and its relationship with other related disciplines, linguistic diversity phenomena and their relationship with various social factors are examined. The course also focuses on issues associated with language contact and studies synchronic and diachronic phenomena and processes that formed the contemporary linguistic reality in Spain and the Hispanic world in general.

Student Assessment
Description
The course is assessed by written final exams at the end of the semester and in September. The exam covers all the topics of the course. Also, in some semesters students are given the opportunity to be assessed through written mid-term examinations or/and final exams at the end of the semester. In this case as well the exams cover all the topics of the course.
