Learning Outcomes
(a) To acquaint students with ancient Greek prose, with emphasis on the genres of historiography and rhetoric.
(b) To familiarize students with the various representatives of ancient Geek historiography and rhetoric, their aims and methods, their relation with their historical era and the particular features of their works.
(c)To enable students to study Greek prose in depth, with due emphasis on issues of linguistic features and distinct style.
Course Content (Syllabus)
The class focuses on ancient Greek prose literature, with emphasis placed either on historiography or rhetoric, and with a thorough examination of representative writers and works. The introduction includes a literary survey of the development of the genres of historiography and rhetoric, giving due emphasis to the most important writers and works. The works are studied from the original, with detailed examination of the language and style, while practical criticism and interpretive analysis form the core part of the course.
