General Prerequisites
Lectures are presented by Films, Power point presentations and CDs with self assesement tests, electronic communication with students. 1. Written examination on course material (50% of the final grade). Examination with answers on questions of knowledge. 2. Oral examination on material from lab exercises (10% of the final grade). 3. Presentation and in depth analysis of review papers relevant to the subject of Physiological Adaptations of Animals to Environment.
Learning Outcomes
The aim of the subject is the study by various approaches of the mecahnisms of adaptation the animals use in order to adapt to the environenment they leave wether it is constant (i.e. water, desert, air or land), or it is changing either due to pollution or due to climate. The approaches are at the level of whole organisms, or specific biochemical mechanisms or at the cellular level.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Comparative reproductive physiology. Determination of metabolic rate in animals. Aerobic and anaerobic metabolism in animals. Metabolic depression in animals. Environment and thermoregulation. Endothermic and exothermic animals. Thermoregulation in endothermic and exothermic animals.Adaptive principles in hypoxic environments. Adaptation of invertebrates to hypoxia. Adaptation of vertebrates to diving. Adaptation of vertebrates to high altitude. Osmoregulation of marine invertebrates to hypotonic and hypertonic environment. Osmoregulation of aquatic vertebrates. Osmoregulation of animals extreme conditions of land environment. Effect of temperature on cell functions. Ρegulatory mechanisms of loss and production οf metabolic heat. Thermoreguation mechanisms at extreme environmental condtions.

Description
For the lesson and lectures are often used information gathered straigth forward from the internet accompanied by films and videos that are concidered usefull for in depth understanding of the information offered during the lecture. Also for the communication with the students is used the MOODLEs where are available announcements, lecture contents, power points with the homework, final results of various examinations.

Student Assessment
Description
For the student evaluation are taken under consideration the follwoing: -50% written examination -40% oral presentation of review papers relevant to the suject of the lectures. The evaluation is made also by the rest of the students present during the presentation -10% oral examination of the practicals
