Learning Outcomes
Cognitive: Training the studends on key issues concerning the distinction, identification and naming of the natural plant groups. Understanding the evolution and the phylogenetic relationships of the plants.
Skills: Use of the stereoscope for observing and recognising the diagnostic morphological characters of different plant taxa. Aquaintance with the use of plant identification keys. Ability for fieldwork and recognition of characteristic families, genera and species of the Greek flora in the field.
Course Content (Syllabus)
1. LECTURES
Principles of plant taxonomy and nomenclature. Plant species concept. Taxonomic characters. Plant classification systems. Basic morphological characters of the seven Divisions of the Plant Kingdom. Diagnostic characters of important families of the Greek Flora. Characteristic species of the main Greek ecosystems. Angiosperms origin and evolution.
2. PRACTICALS
Instructions for collecting and drying plant specimens. Morphological diagnostic characters and use of keys for the taxonomic identification of plant specimens belonging to different families of the Greek flora.
3. FIELD TRIPS
Collection and identification of native plants. Creating a small Herbarium
