Learning Outcomes
By the completion of the course the students must be able to: • Recognize the consequences of partial edentulism and understand the subjective needs and objective demands of the patient relating to it. • Assess the cost and benefit of the rehabilitation with removable partial dentures and be aware of the prognosis and complications. • Know the procedures for collecting the necessary diagnostic material, as well as the criteria for its assessment. • Elaborate a complete treatment plan with removable partial dentures, properly appreciating the mechanical, biological and aesthetic data. • Describe the successive clinical and laboratory procedures that lead to the implementation of the prosthodontic treatment plan, as well as the follow-up protocol. • Be aware of the indications and advantages of the alternative design approaches and of the various construction techniques.

Course Content (Syllabus)
i. Assessment of the partially edentulous patient according the clinical, radiological and functional data and in agreement with the subjective needs, expectations and priorities of the patient. Collection of diagnostic material, evaluation of patient’s needs and demands, study of the case, elaboration of treatment plan. Contemporary principles of partial denture design. ii. Advantages, disadvantages, limitations and consequences of the treatment modalities applicable for the prosthodontic rehabilitation of partial edentulism. Cost-efficiency aspects of the prosthodontic treatment with removable partial dentures. Survival, technical and biological complications. iii. Clinical and laboratory construction procedures for removable partial dentures: Preparation of mouth and modification of the crown of abutment teeth, impression making, construction and try-in of metal framework, maxillomandibular relations records, denture try-in and finishing. Alternative construction methods for optimum efficiency. Follow-up protocol and long-term maintenance.
