Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will understand: 1. mental abilities and psychological maturation at various stages of childhood 2. the causes of dental fear and anxiety, especially in emergency situations 3. how to guide children's behavior so as to secure their cooperation 4. to plan treatment and complete it succesfully with the principals of quadrant dentistry 5. how to perform state of the art, evidence based clinical procedures 6. how to treat potentially cooperative children and adolescents with special health care needs
Course Content (Syllabus)
The content of contemporary Paediatric Dentistry. Mental development and psychological maturation of the child. Age characteristics and dental treatment. Factors affecting the dental experience. The art of communication with empathy. Fear and anxiety. Temperament and parental rearing styles. The effect of dental environment. Behavior management. Basic communication techniques. Dental Behavior Management Problems. Ethics, legal considerations and parental consent. Pharmacological management of child behavior, sedation, conscious sedation, general anesthesia. Safety and legislation. Treatment plan and how to achieve its completion. Presentation to parents. Parental presence. Handling emergencies. Dental caries. Evidence based preventive program and compliance. Local anesthesia in children. Quadrant dentistry. Restoration of deciduous and young permanent teeth. Pulp treatment of deciduous teeth. Erosion, abrasion and attrition of teeth. Developmental dental abnormalities and their management. Growth and development of occlusion. Interception in the primary and mixed dentition. Dental trauma of deciduous and young permanent teeth. Child Abuse. Periodontal disease in children and adolescents. Oral manifestations of various diseases in childhood.
