Course Content (Syllabus)
The main objective of the course is to provide an introduction to the subject of Political Sociology. Emphasis is given to the study of different research directions of this discipline. After an introduction to the subject of the course, we focus on conceptual issues and basic theoretical models included in the field of Political Sociology. We analyze the concepts of politics, power, sovereignty and bureaucracy. Moreover, we analyze the theories of the state and elite theories, as well as approaches to the study of political culture. The course also focuses on aspects of both "conventional" and the "non-conventional" political participation, with a focal point on the question of whether a political representation crisis is taking place. The last major theme of the course concerns the different facets of globalization in environments associated both with national and non-national elements. Particular emphasis is given to the study of Saskia Sassen’s work on the sociology of globalization. The course is offered to Erasmus students: please contact the instructor for further information
