Good knowledge of Development Economics and Regional Theory.
Learning Outcomes
The course aims to provide the students with the basic analysis and knowledge on the goals, the strategies and the means of regional economic policy, in theory and in practice, regarding regional policy in Greece and the European Union since the 1950s. After the end of the semester, τhe student should clearly understand and be able to analyze regional policy models in Greece and the EU.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The necessity and goals of tegional economic development policy. Strategies and means of regional policy: investment incentives, productive and social infrstructure, industrial zones, Public administration deconcebtration. New orientations in regional policy: the role of SMEs in regional development, technological innovation. Reginal inequalities in the EU. Regional economic development policy in the EU: institional framework and goaas. EU regional policy overview 1957-2013. Next Programming Period 2014-2020. The new economic georgraphy of the EU. Regional Governance system in the EU.
The strategy of regional development in Greece in the context of the European Union. The institutional framework of the motivation policy in Greece. Critical review of the regional development motives, 1950-1981. Analytical presentation of the 1262/82 law, about the motives for regional development in Greece: the concept of the law, determination of its main aims, evaluation of its results. The concept of the 1892/90, 2234/94 and 2601/98 laws. Meditteranean Integrated Projects, EU Framework Programmes and regional development in Greece. 3rd EU Framework Programme: The operational framework programme “Competitiveness” of the Ministry of Development. Evaluation of the contibution of the regional development motives policy in the regional inequalities decrease in Greece, 1950-1990.
