Learning Outcomes
After completing this course, students will be able: • To handle with complex problems on composition and identification of complexes. • To Plan and execute the synthesis of complexes manipulating laboratory apparatus and laboratory instruments. • Operate spectrometers and other laboratory instruments and understand the basic principles governing the respective methods. • To present the results of laboratory studies in the form of written work. • To present research articles using audio-visual media.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Definition of ligand (monodantate, polydantate and chelating ligands) and coordination number; Coordination numbers and geometries; Chelate effect; Relation of geometries and symmetry (symmetry elements, crystal systems and character tables for chemically important symmetry groups); Nomenclature of coordination compounds; structural isomerism (geometrical, ionic, coordination, etc); stability constants and ligand exchange rates; Relation of electronic configuration with parmagnetism and diamagnetism; Spin-only moment; Electric conductance; Conductors, semi-condactors, non condactors; Theories of coordination compounds (Verner’s, Sidwick’s, Pauling’s valence bond theory theories, crystal field theory, ligand field theory and MO theory); Study of coordination compounds using spectroscopic and magnetic measurements techniques; Orgel and Tanabe-Sugano diagrams; Classification of coordination compounds (halide & pseudohalide complexes; aqua complexes; hydroxyl and oxo complexes; dioxygen and dinitrogen complexes; Complexes with oxygen and nitrogen donor ligands; carbonyl complexes, nitrozyl complexes; cyclopentadiene complexes); Syntheses of complexes (addition reactions, electron transfer reactions, ligand replacement reactions); Reactions of coordination compounds (metal based reactions, ligands based reactions, comples based reactions); Coordination compounds and applications; Study of complexes using spectroscopic and magnetic techniques) Laboratory exercises: Preparation of manganese, nickel and copper complexes with Schiff-bases ligands; preparation of nickel and Chromium complexes with dithiocarbamate and phosphine ligands; preparation of Chromium complexes with ethylenediamine, urea, isothiocyanate oxalate and ammine ligands; preparation of Cobalt complexes with pyridine and ammine ligands; preparation of Copper complexes with ammine, acetylacetonate and dithiocarbamate ligands; preparation of iron complexes with dithiocarbamate ligands; preparation of Cobalt complexes with amine ligands; study of the prepared complexes using IR and UV-Vis spectroscopic techniques; magnetic and molecular conductance measurements; spectrochemical series of studied ligands; structure determination using spectroscopic and magnetic measurements data; bibliographic search; oral presentation of research articles; homeworks.
