Course Content (Syllabus)
The music of Greek antiquity has been almost completely lost to us as sound and as listening experience. The rare music texts that have been preserved over the centuries can only barely enlighten us were the music itself and its performance is concerned. None the less, there is another source of information for the music in Ancient Greece, its depictions in art. In particular, the vase painting of the archaic and classical period offers valuable help not only for the study of the history of musical instrument, but mainly for the information that it offers concerning the role of music in worship, in education and in every aspect of everyday life of the antiquity. The iconographic material of musical scene is treated as a code that enables us to decipher the importance and function of music in the ancient Greek world. The lectures of this course are supported by the use of material of the Archive of Musical Iconography.
