Course Content (Syllabus)
The 19th century is characterized in music by the emergence of aesthetic discourse as well as by the exploration of new forms of expression in all levels of musical organization (form, harmony, etc.). The aim of the course is to develop the students’ methodological skill in combining aesthetic comment with analytical observation. Thus, the course focuses on romantic aesthetic ideas such as organicism, the aesthetic autonomy of music, historicism, the poetic nature of music, and nationalism in connection with representative expressions of these ideas in music, such as in the music dramas of Wagner, the character piano pieces (Schubert, Schumann και Chopin), the cycles for piano (Schumann), the lied and the cycles of lied (Schubert, Schumann), the symphonic poem (Liszt, Strauss), the programmatic symphony (Berlioz), various expressions of national opera (in Germany, Russia, etc.) and the symphonies and the chamber music pieces by Brahms.
