Learning Outcomes
During this course, we attempt to approach in a compositional manner the basic principals of baroque instrumental polyphony of the 17th-18th centuries, focusing on the fugue as a representative musical genre and exemplary compositional practice. The students must be able, after the completion of the course, to be able to compose a three-part fughetta in the style and technique of 18th century polyphony.
Course Content (Syllabus)
Through a process of combining lecturing with weekly exercises, the course's progress covers the following subjects: theory and basic principles of tonal counterpoint, counterpoint species, embellishment techniques, imitation, subject / answer / countersubject (theory), structure and developement of fugal sections (exposition, episodes, codettas, stretto sections). Representative works, especially by J. S. Bach, are analysed throughout all lectures. The final aim of the course is that the student should be able to compose a full three-part fugal exposition followed by a modulatory episode.
